HISTORY OF THE PARK

About

The Park area was originally dedicated as Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park in 1985. The State of Wyoming Vietnam Memorial Structure was developed and later dedicated on Veterans Day, November 11, 1986 to Wyoming citizens who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.

In the years to follow, many other memorial monuments were added to the Park to honor veterans of the many world conflicts in which the United States of America has been involved.

The Veterans Memorial Park Foundation is continually developing ideas for improving the park and adding memorial value. The War Dogs Memorial is in progress and plans for a dedication in 2018.

Development

On September 16, 1985, the Cody City Council agreed to provide property for a new Wyoming State Vietnam War Memorial. The proposed memorial would include names of all Wyoming soldiers killed or missing in action during the Vietnam War carved into black granite, each listed with their respective dates of death or disappearance.

The land provided, located north of Beck Lake and across the Greybull Highway, was leveled and prepared by City of Cody employees. The process of concrete pouring began soon after on August 15, 1986.
